Beck

Banjo Story, 1988

Banjo Story is the first known Beck recording. It is a home-made tape from 1988 that was never actually released, but given out for free, sold at the counter of friends' record stores, or sold at gigs. It has, however, since been discovered and made it on to the trading circuit.
Several of the songs have two titles. This is because the original bootlegger made up his own titles when the tape was first copied - these are given in brackets. Beck's actual titles come from the j-card that came with the cassette, assuming it was written by Beck.

Track listing

1. Banjo (Let's Go Moon Some Cars)
2. Goin' Nowhere Fast
3. Detonate (Talkin' Demolition Expert)
4. RTD (Sucker Without A Brain)
5. untitled (My Head is Gonna Break In Two)
6. untitled (Atmospheric Recordings)
7. Burn (You Can Be So Careless)
8. Farmboy Breakdown (Instrumental Rag)
9. Bottle Of Wine
10. Olde English (Chillin' Like Gilligan)
11. Woe (Together We Found Misery)
12. untitled (Hell)

1992 Demos/Metal Demos, 1992

1992 Demo is an album of home demos that Beck recorded when he was in the age of 20-22 years old. Like most of his early home demos this one is lo-fi and avant-garde. Some of the songs were done with Steve Hanft, and may even be remnants of the band they were in together called Loser. More recently, another version of this demo was found with some actual Loser recordings on the other side of the tape.
It can be found online from time to time via download and bit torrent. Like other early Beck cassettes, it was recorded on an analog recording machine known as a "four-track." The demo's lyrics are used in quite a random way, and the listener can hear a hint of what Beck's later songs sound like. And also like some of his other early cassettes, he may have made copies of the tape, and sold them at shows that he played. This album also contains a humorous folk rendition of "Tough Fuckin' Shit" by the notorious punk rocker GG Allin.

The tape, upon discovery, was only labelled "1992 Demo." A few fans decided to call it "Buck Fuck Iowa," but that remains an unofficial title.

Track listing

1. Tough Fuckin' Shit
2. Fuck You Up & Get High
3. Satan Was Way Cool
4. Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah
5. Mmmmmmmmmm
6. When The Water Will Take Back The Land
7. Run From The World
8. In This World
9. That Highway Won't Get You To Heaven
10. Ace of Spades
11. She Was A Beautiful Woman
12. I've Just Seen A Face Lift
13. Trash Can
14. Are You Positive?
15. Loser (Demo)

Golden Leftovers,1993

Golden Leftovers is a demo album by Beck that leaked in 2001, although all the tracks were recorded in 1993. The tracks consist of the leftover material from Beck's album Golden Feelings. Beck was most likely not going to release any of the recordings and had probably forgotten about them at the actual time Golden Leftovers leaked onto the Internet. It has been said that someone at Sonic Enemy leaked it to the public, cleverly, while Beck was at the height of his fame. Many of the songs had either been used on previous demos by Beck or would go on to be used on future Albums and/or Singles. "Mexico", "Death Is Coming To Get You", "Yr Love Is Weird", "Head Cut Off", "Slimy Power Chick" and "Mattress" were the only tracks that Beck didn't come back to on any of his official future releases.

Track listing

1. "Mexico" - 5.26
2. "Steve Threw Up" - 3.20
3. "Death Is Coming To Get You" - 2.54

Fresh Meat & Old Slabs, 1993

Fresh Meat and Old Slabs is an unreleased album by Beck. Very little is known about the album, which is much more obscure than the other unofficial Beck (non)releases. Beck had this to say, "Yeah, that's something I made for my Mom - actually for her birthday, I think. I made it because she opened up a cafe and she wanted some of my music to play in the cafe. So I put together some of the different songs off the different tapes I'd made."[citation needed] The album was recorded on 4-track and circulated amongst Hansen family members. Wider circulation of this album since occurred through bootlegging channels.

All songs written by Beck Hansen.

Beck, Like The Beer

Beck, Like the Beer is a demo mini-album by Beck which was never circulated and is, naturally, hard to come by.
